Stop buying dedupe without testing it first!

I keep getting emails that say something like this:  “Hey, I bought dedupe product umptysquat, and it’s slower than I expected when copying to tape,” or “the dedupe ratio isn’t anywhere near what was advertised,” or “how am I supposed to do this or that?”  The problem is that once you bought it, it’s too late to ask these questions!

Everything you’re planning on doing with your new dedupe system should be tested before you buy it.  Don’t assume or believe anything until you’ve seen it with your own eyes in your own datacenter with your own data.  Any vendor that objects to this idea is either being too eager just to sell you something (whether you need it or not) or is trying to hide something.
