A unique night with my daughter

I just watched "Star Trek: A Captain's Log" with my 14-year-old daughter. It was done just before ST7, when Kirk handed things over the Picard. She saw the new movie and knew nothing about TOS, TNG, DS9, Voyager, Enterprise, or any of the movies. As a dad struggling to relate to a teenager, it was some of the best 45 mins I've had in a while. Here's a sample of her questions: 1. Why was this show such a big deal? 2. Did Spock ever hit on Uhura in the old show? Not even a little bit? 3. Does Kirk kiss everyone? Is he supposed to be overacting like that? 4. Is that a bluetooth headset Uhura is wearing? 5. How many movies did they make? 11? Holy Cow, why didn't they also make a TV show or something. What? They made four more? Did one of them star the guy from X-Men? 6. While watching scenes from TOS: So is this the old spock/new spock? Why is he younger/older? How are they on the planet Vulcan? Didn't it get blown up? etc, etc, etc, etc. 7. MAN, those are bad computer graphics (when looking at the older movies). 8. What, no computer graphics? How did they get those light beams to come out and stuff like that? And then the line I thought I'd never here out of HER mouth: Man, I need to go into computers. I almost cried.

Oh well. Back to work. Do feel a bit like Scotty some days though- "What I just did for you- do you realize how difficult and brilliant that was? No? Where are you going? Hello?" ;-)

Please note that the only reason I got invited to this was that I SCUBA dive and belong to a meetup.com local diving group. One day I'm at work and voila! I get a notification to something that I couldn't pass up. Besides the coolness factor, the pricing of the event was just too good too be true. Actually, one of the nice things about hanging with my diving buddies is that with them, I'm just "Curtis." No one asks me backup questions, or what I think about the latest offering from so and so, etc. I get to just dive.
