Power supply cable quality shameful.

I bought the initial model of MacBook Pro, just after they came out. The cable near the magsafe connector on the original power supply failed just out of warranty. I'm careful with my equipment, and the only maintenance I've needed to do is an occasional cleaning. I've since plunked down 79$ for a replacement supply. I bought a more recent MacBook for my wife, and the cable failed at the magsafe connector on it too. So I bought a new supply for that one as well. The cable on one of the replacement supplies is beginning to fail at the supply end. The quality of this cable (which is only two conductor) is shameful. I would encourage you to not be careful with the power supply. If you see any sign of wear at all, you want it to fail before the warranty is up. Since there is no source at all for this connector, Apple has made no apparent improvements in build quality, and the improved strain relief is only showing up on supplies suitable for the AIR, I'm likely to hack a standard coaxial power connector into the MBP. On the flip side, I would encourage you to try the Apple bluetooth Mighty Mouse. Being able to right click by right clicking is worth the money. Especially if you run Windows under Parallels Desktop or Bootcamp.

Hmmm all of the macs we have bought for the company came with the iLife suite (or most of it as near as I can tell). The installs are on a second disk though so if you do a clean install of the OS you don't get the extra apps ... like the developer apps and iLife etc. So you might look there before you go buy that stuff.

I assume your frustration stems from pressing the backspace key and getting the firefox back-a-page behavior. I share your rage at that one. Thankfully this is easy to correct via the Firefox about:config options screen: about:config set "browser.backspace_action" to 2 poof! no more rage. :-) As for producing PDFs, note that the OSX print dialog box will always include an option to save your output to a PDF file. And as for paying for that ipod touch firmward update, it's a side effect of some SEC accounting rules. Some think this charge is going away soon. Reference: http://bit.ly/ZkggW

Mac Switch

Made the switch about year ago and have been generally positive since...except for the 3 apps that I need to run that still needs windows. Used Windows since 3.1 and faced many of the same annoyances. >> Why when my power supply is plugged in does the light on it sometimes display green and other times displays amber? Amber = Charging, Green = Fully Charged >> How do I make PDFs of Word docs now? In the print dialog, the bottom left corner should have a PDF button. Click on that, save as PDF. Works on most/all applications. Nice having this built into the OS. >> I now bought Office 2008 Standard so I can connect Entourage to Exchange. Can I continue using just Mail without having to use iCal? Am using Mail and iCal - thing is most apps will synch with iCal. Now waiting for blackberry to release their mac desktop so that I can sync my blackbery. Otherwise, will have to shell out for a third party utility. >> What's the difference between clicking the red button and the yellow button? In both scenarios, iTunes keeps playing, so the app is still running. The only difference I can see is that if I minimize (yellow), I get a mini version of the app in the doc on the right. Red closes the Window (same as Apple-W), Yellow minimizes the app. Neither will kill the app - you need to Apple-Q or quit from the menu. >> The Backspace key says Delete, and there is no Delete key (a key that deletes text in front of it). Is there something I'm missing? Delete = Fn+Del (or get an external keyboard) Backspace = Del Little weird but... Philip

But CCC has no history

It is nice to be able to boot from CCC, but it has no history. It's a clone of the current state of your harddrive. If you decide you need to go back to a previous version of a file, forget it. You can only go back to the version in the clone. With TM you can have as much history as you have room for. What would be nice is to be able to take TM backups based on a CC clone. IOW, you make the CCC clone, then you tell TM to only backup incremental files from now on, essentially using the CCC as the full. I don't think you can do that.

Carbon Copy Cloner

Before MacOS X, you could just drag and drop the "System" folder to another hard drive and then boot from it. You can't do this with MacOS X. Get yourself a copy of Carbon Copy Cloner, and create a backup copy of your boot disk on your TimeMachine disk. Now if something happens to your primary boot disk, you can boot from the TimeMachine disk and use the machine until you replace and repair the primary disk.
