TSM Performance Tuning
TSM can run on SANs, VPN, LANs, WANs, and/or all simultaneously or independently. Each TSM Server should have 1 GB of Memory capacity and more depending upon the business requirements for number of clients. CPU speed will effect the application processing time. Tape Libraries and Tape Devices effect the backup speed depending upon type and configuratoin of the devices and application. You can decrease backup time by increasing the number of "max sessions" parameter on the client and server, but ensure that you have enough tape devices to handle the increased load. You should examine all of these variables to determine if it is feasible. Make sure that the server is configured to have 256 concurrent client sessions but it's also dependent upon the variables listed. Set "randomization" parameter on ther server to be 0 so that it will not split up the clients in the schedule again upon reviewing all variables here . Buffer space for the DB and Recovery Logs configured on the TSM server. You can reset this parameter if it has hit the 1 million mark or above or based upon the size of your backup server. The following also need to be taken into considertion: Network configuration of the OS on the backup server such as TCP/IP protocol parameters, multiplexing, etc., TCPIP Buffsize and Maxsize on the server and clients in the configuration files, and the TCPIPServeraddress listed on the clients and if that name's in DNS. |
