Need backup/archive references in movies/tv PDF Print E-mail
Written by W. Curtis Preston

If you've ever seen a reference to backup, dr, or archive in the movies, tell me about it.

I'm building a collection of clips in movies and tv that have anything to do with backup, archive, dr, restores, encryption, etc.  I need your help.

I actually have quite a few already, but I need more, and I know there's more out there.  Here's a list of examples, to give you an idea of what I'm looking for:

  • I am Legend: "This is stored on six redundant hard drives"
  • Star Wars: Attack of the Clones: Obi-Wan is told that if an item is not in the archives, it does not exist
  • Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith: Yoda says "if into the security recordings you go, only pain will you find"
  • Zoolander: "I got two words for you, sugar!  Zip Disk!"
  • Disclosure: "You're supposed to protect the files"
  • Disclosure: "You guys back your files up on DAT?"
  • Disclosure: "The system has been totally deleted"
  • Sex and The City S4E8: Carrie discovers the value of backup
  • 24: "The memory chip is inside..."
  • 24: "I can't contact the backup server"
  • Alias: too many to count in seasons 1&2, plan to watch other seasons for more
  • Tron: The whole movie is about them searching for a deleted file
  • 6th day: "We back up his brain constantly"
  • Along Came A Spider: Pictographic Encryption demonstrated, social engineering
  • Blade: Scenes of the Vampire Eribus archives
  • Copycat: Sigourney Weaver tells cops to back up to tape
  • Hostage: Encryption demonstrated
  • Perfect Stranger: Incriminating email found in computer
  • Perfect Stranger: Rabisi tricks Bruce Willis into letting him into his office
  • Philadelphia: Missing file on his computer
  • Simone: Pacino handed hard drive
  • Simone: Pacino's daughter restores Simone
  • Sneakers: Multiple instances of encryption, surveillance, social engineering, hacking
  • Swordfish: Hacking
  • Hackers: Tape robot scene
  • No way out: Tape robot scene
  • Chuck: Opening sequence about the intersect

Do you know of other references to backup, archive, dr, restores, or encryption in movies/tv?  Please respond to this blog entry with a comment.  If your reference is to a tv show, please give me season & episode number if at all possible.

Thank you in advance for all your help!

There are plenty of references to encryption in "24" -- too numerous to mention, actually. There are also references to DR.

MI (Mission Impossible) - in the first movie i think it was (i have to check), you can see the StorageTek library at work. This one's not working with tapes either, but CD's or DVD's.
Anyway, our STK reps were pretty proud of it too when the movie came out. It's in fact custom designed for the movie because the library used does not exist for real.

Eraser - its an Arnie movies where the female lead worked for a weapons manufacturer and she is asked by the government to steal the plans, she goes into a secure room where you see her access data (coming from tape - you see the robot). She saves the data on a small CD which she hides in her make-up mirror thingy ....

I couldn't find the exact quote, but I am pretty sure there was a discussion about backups on the Harrison Ford movie, Firewall.
