.12.6 to .13.x combatibility

It appears that you can't rdiff-backup using .12.6 to .13.x system, is
that right? I get the following error:

Assuming that you can't go from old to new, I guess I'll have to make
the jump to .13 (the server I'm backing up to isn't mine and the admin
can't seem to get .12.6 set up, and it's a debian unstable system
with .13.3 in the current archive). I was wondering if someone would be
so kind as to give a quick outline of changes from .12 to .13 and how
stable it is, or if there are any gotchas.
