rsnapshot doesnt warn of invalid exclude pathes
March 07, 2015 02:33AM
Hi,

I'm new to this list and I'm not entirely sure about this one:

I had a rsnapshot job which used an exclude file:

exclude_file /home/m/config/rsnapshot/exclude

which worked fine. I thought. The exclude file is:

/home/$USER/archive/movies
/home/$USER/archive/music

(and some more)

on my latest call to rsnapshot, it warned me that some files under

/home/m/archive/music/...

are vanished. From this I conclude that it actually backuped these directories,
too (never checked, ... I'm doing my backup to a 2TB external drive where some
other stuff is lying around, too... so I never checked whether it actually
excluded the files).

Apparently, rsnapshot seems not to resolve the $USER variable in the exclude
files, causing me to backup my music and movies all the time (I sync them in
another way). It would be really nice if rsnapshot would warn about this!

As said, I'm not entirely sure I've got everything right here. Anyways, thanks
so much for this awesome tool, guys! Always a pleasure to me when using it!

As far as I know, you have to pass a relative path to your backup-source.
Look at the ubuntuusers-wiki:

Please check this. rsnapshot is designed to restore a backup with ease.
You just have to cd into the folder and look if the directory archive
exists. It makes debugging lot easier.

It's rsync's job to parse the $USER-variable. The exclude-file is passed
directly to rsync. I don't know this for sure, but I did not find anything
in the documentation about replacing variables in an exclude-file.
