Is this a bug or a feature?
April 29, 2015 04:38AM
When I upgraded to Debian 8, my ssh options in Rsnapshot broke and so
did my backups. It caught me off guard because it wasn't in the release
notes.
Here is the Debian bug report
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=717451
Here is the Ubuntu bug report
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/rsnapshot/1.3.1-6ubuntu1
Here is the same but on this list in multiple reports
http://sourceforge.net/p/rsnapshot/mailman/message/31221393/
http://sourceforge.net/p/rsnapshot/mailman/message/29743724/

Is this a bug or a feature? If this is a feature what is so good about it?

It's not a feature. It's a confirmed bug. After seeing the fix, I
remembered, we merged it in current master already:
https://github.com/rsnapshot/rsnapshot/pull/15

I would assume, the debian-maintainer patched the debian-package already!?
To solve your problem, build the current master from github by yourself.

Benedikt Heine

I'm reading your bug report. In the meantime, is there any reason you
can't use single quotes instead of double quotes, to help avoid the
confusion?

Hi,

A lot of people is being afected by this bug. It's also present in Debian Sid (Rsnapshot 1.3.1-6).

The patch 14_rsync_rsh_quoting.diff is in the source debian package, but it's not applied (I don't know why).

Currently the best way to solve this bug is to upgrade to Ubuntu stable package (rsnapshot-1.3.1-6ubuntu1) or downgrading to Wheezy previous version (1.3.1-3).

Thanks

If the source package has the patch for this bug in it, and the upstream is patched for this bug, then this existing bug in Debian's binary package, then the reason why the bug still exists is a packaging issue.

At least his means I can simply rebuild the source package with the patch applied to fix my problem, but I am going to make sure that the maintainer is notified so this will be fixed when Debian 8.1 comes out.

I did an apt-get source rsnapshot and I saw the exact patch in the tree just where you said it would be. I went and emailed the person that looks to be the maintiner in the change log and asked about this issue. For now I am going to read a little about the Debian build system so I can rebuild the package the the patch applied so I can reactivate my backups.

If you get anywhere with that, would you publish a step-by-step
procedure how you did the build? While I'm quite expert at RPM's, my
last experience with Debian style build systems was a lot of "d00d,
just read the code!!!", which was not helpful. I publish my tools for
building RPM's at https://github.com/nkadel/ in multiple repositories.

I already have a github account that I created for Steel City Code Fest
2015 and I haven't published any of my scripts yet. I am sure I can
commit something up there on the Debian build system after I played
around with it. Just to insure that someone would annoy me about it
until I follow through, I am going to cc my Linux users group.

If you download Rsnapshot Debian source package from Sid (1.3.1-6), you will see the patch "14_rsync_rsh_quoting.diff" available in patches directory, but not applied in the upstream. You can apply it manually, and I guess you also should edit the file "series" and add the applied patch name there. Then you rebuild the package following the steps in the howto.

I did it some days ago and it works, but I finally decided to use the Ubuntu stable package (rsnapshot 1.3.1-6ubuntu1), fully compatible with Debian Jessie.

[quote]It's not a feature. It's a confirmed bug. After seeing the fix, I

So when will we see a new release? The last is from 2008.
