At the filesystem level there is no hierarchy of hard links. Every link
to a file has equal "ownership" of it, and as long as a single link exists
the file is accessible.

Which order of snapshots to safely delet
August 24, 2007 03:45AM
Hi All,
Am sure I'm missing something easy here, but here goes anyway...
I backup around 8 servers to a separate backup server via rsnapshot. Works fine, no problems.
I'm running out of diskspace and as such need to ammend my schedule accordingly. Presently my schedule is 5xdaily, 4xweekly and 3xmonthly. They run every mon-fri, every sat and 1st sun respectively.
Unfortunately, its about to hit the limits of my 2.3TB disk on my backup server, so need to prune some existing snapshots whilst I re-examine the schedule (probably cut down the number of weekly and monthly snaps)
So, in which order can I kill off backups??? I presume in reverse obvious order (monthly.2 downwards, weekly.3 downwards and daily.4 downwards), however am just checking really as I don't want to go deleting older snapshots to later find that some are used by newer snapshots hard-linking back. Am pretty sure this won't happen, but thought I'd check before doing the dirty deed.
TIA
Dan
