rsnapshot for WinXP client backup

Rsnapshot has worked perfectly for backing up my Linux
file server I now want to try rsnapshot for backing up
a "My Documents" directory on a WindowsXP client.

I found a few howtos that use cwRsync. This approach
requies installation of additional software on the
Windows client which I would like to avoid to keep
things as simple as possible.

The "My Documents" directory is shared and I can
smbmount that share on my Linux box at
/mnt/WinClient1/My Documents/. So can I simply run
rsnapshot against the mounted share?

Entry in /etc/rsnapshot.conf:
backup /mnt/WinClient1/My Documents/ WinClient1/

Question 1: Will this work or are there known problems
with this approach.

Question 2: How does rsnapshot handle the case where
the Windows Client share is not mounted?

This is exactly how I manage my Exchange server backup, except I use
sshfs to mount the Windows file system, however, the same works just
fine using a samba mount or just a straight ntfs mount.

The way I took care of the problem if the share wasn't there is with a
script that tests for the existence of a .test file on the share itself
and if it can't find it, then it attempts twice to remount it. If it
fails both times, then I get an email warning that there was a problem
mounting the share. I know this isn't the greatest way to manage this,
but it works quite well for me, it's simple and didn't require a ton of
extra time to implement. Granted YMMV with this and on how available
your mount is (a desktop client might be turned off at night, etc), but
it works just fine here.
