getting front end capacity for licensing
November 13, 2017 11:59AM
We have been asked for front end capacity numbers for our tsm installation.

We have three servers v 7.1.7.1 running on RHEL 6.9.

Clients range from 6.0 on up.
Checked the fecapacity field, and those numbers look like pure junk.
Tried using the actual_size field in filespaces table, but this is usually empty.
Is there a good way to get these numbers?

Supposedly they exist in the ops center, but haven't found them there either.

Any help appreciated.

Hi Gary,

I think that, If you have any clients that don't report the capacity usage,
you have to launch some scripts.

See:

https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/en/SSGSG7_7.1.7/srv.solutions/t_
ssdisk_mon_license_compliance.html

"On the Operations Center menu bar, hover over the settings icon and click
Licensing.

The front-end capacity estimate is displayed on the Front-end Usage page.

If a value is displayed in the Not Reporting column, click the number to
identify clients that did not report capacity usage.

To estimate capacity for clients that did not report capacity usage, go to
the following FTP site, which provides measuring tools and instructions:

ftp://public.dhe.ibm.com/storage/tivoli-storage-management/front_end_capacit
y_measurement_tools

Follow the instructions in the latest available licensing guide to measure
front-end capacity by script.

Add the Operations Center estimate and any estimates that you obtained by
using a script.

Verify that the estimated capacity complies with your licensing agreement."

https://demo.tsm.ibmserviceengage.com:11090/help/SSGSG7_OP_CNTR/com.ibm.tsm.
ui.doc/ic/t_sur_occupancy_view.html

Restriction: The reported front-end capacity measures active backups to
determine the size of the protected data. If a client archives data and does
not also back up that data, the capacity is not included in the front-end
capacity measurement that is shown in the Operations Center. However, the
size of the archived data must still be applied against your licensed
entitlements. Refer to your license information for approved methods of
measuring client data that is only archived.
