Throughput of data domain with Netbackup

Hi,

I have a data domain DD565 connected a solaris master server 6.5.1 with a direct cross cable on 1Gbps port. The max total throughput we are getting is around 45-50 MB/sec. Can any one share the throughput they are getting with Data domain. I suspect that this is not what we should get.

Thanks & Regards,

Similar setup here with a DD4xx (older model) with 6.x, using it as a disk
storage unit connected <-> via NFS <-> to media server <-> master server.
Speed for backup is typically gigabit speed as long as the clients can
drive it, same for restore, 80-110MiB/s.

[quote]That is good speed you are getting 80-100 MB per second. Amazing. I think
there is some problem with my setup. Can the speed of slot to which NIC
card is attached in media server also affect the throughput. My NIC is
attached to 33Mhz slot. I think moving it to 66 Mhz can help.

Any suggestions, guys.

Yeah, if you are using older servers, that's definitely going to be a problem
a bottleneck on the server itself, moving to a 66mhz slot should help.
You should also do some file transfer OR iperf/netperf tests and see what
the raw throughput is without involving NetBackup.

Some other things to look at:

In: /usr/openv/netbackup

$ cat NET_BUFFER_SZ
1048576
$ cat NET_BUFFER_SZ_REST
1048576

In: /usr/openv/netbackup/db/config

$ cat NUMBER_DATA_BUFFERS
32
$ cat SIZE_DATA_BUFFERS
262144

$ cat NUMBER_DATA_BUFFERS_RESTORE
32
$ cat SIZE_DATA_BUFFERS_DISK
262144

In a 32-bit 33Mhz slot, the MAXIMUM possible data flow through the slot is 132MB/sec. If that slot is shared with other devices, your throughput will be even slower. And that's assuming that you get 100% of the bus just for transfers which you won't get. Add to that the TCP/IP overhead, and there's no way you're going to get great throughput on a GigE card in that slot.

And you better not have your HBAs on the same bus as your NICs... A single HBA can easily saturate that bus.
