Status 71 for System State backup
December 03, 2009 05:44AM
We have recently started getting status 71 for just about all of our
system state backups for our 2000/2003 servers.

As far as we are aware nothing has changed from the netbackup side or
the server configuration side.

Any suggestions of cause or solution much appreciated.

Regards

James

James,

Check the includes and clients files for the specific policy.

When I get error 71 on my unix boxes it is because a directive in the policy includes is invalid for one of the clients. This has happened when I've tweaked the includes file to do a special partial backup of a client and forget to put it back to the ALL_LOCAL_DRIVES.

My guess is that you may have a windows cluster and some of your shares are failed over to the other half. This is assuming you are backing up each half of the cluster by its real name and not the virtual one.

Jeff,

Thanks for the information. The particular problem is only for Windows
machine where we have a policy simply to backup the System State.

Most of the machines are standalone servers, with a couple of windows
clusters which we backup via the virtual name.

I am a bit stumped until I can look further into the problem.

We recently went through the same issue. First of all this is not a NetBackup problem so don't take a lot of heat for it :)

Now the solution. There is a VSS rollup package from MS which fixes this problem. You can get it from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940349
If your Windows team builds the servers using RIS or some other means of scripted installation you should check the following technote:
http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/315898.htm. This issue caused the backups to start & not transfer any data & remain active for a few days. This was post VSS rollup install.

Also check out the following technote, they might also help:
http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/292829.htm

Following article is just helpful in troubleshooting VSS:
http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/323943.htm

Hope this helps.

Anything logged in the SYSTEM or APPLICATION log at the time of the
backup?
Can you do an NTBackup directly to disk?

If this works, try a new policy and try the backup again?

What about if you use NTBackup?? Anything in the APPLICATION or SYSTEM
Log when you get the 71?

for Win2k boxes, you must be using the System State Component in the
policy (unless you are using All Local Drives).

deleted the other emails about this, as I had no response from you

Disabling multistreaming will not fix the system state backup problem, it will only change the return code to a status of 1 if the rest of the backup works. Which in most cases does.

We have submitted enhancement request to netbackup to change the code such that an unique status code and message would be generated in the case of a system state backup failure.

I was just reading that and checking my backups….

I am not seeing the issue or I am reading this wrong

I have some 2008 servers in a policy that does ALL_LOCAL_DRIVES with multi-stream on.

For the 2008 servers I get a stream for
SET SNAP_ID=servername_1260927775
System_State:

And going into the BAR is see this for a 2008 client ( and yes the operating system for that server in netbackup is listed as 2008)

So what is it I am suppose to be missing from my backups?

For the original problem reported, the requester should run ntbackup.exe
and see if they can run a backup of the system state normally.

Suggested to look at the System, Application logs, disk space, ect, ect

It's crazy we devote our own time to respond, that surely they could
take the time to either say "yes done this or" "Thanks everyone you

We have recently started getting status 71 for just about all of our
system state backups for our 2000/2003 servers.

As far as we are aware nothing has changed from the netbackup side or
the server configuration side.

Any suggestions of cause or solution much appreciated.

Regards

James

Status 71 for System State backup

Status 71 for System State backup
December 03, 2009 08:10AM
Jeff,

Thanks for the information. The particular problem is only for Windows
machine where we have a policy simply to backup the System State.

Most of the machines are standalone servers, with a couple of windows
clusters which we backup via the virtual name.

I am a bit stumped until I can look further into the problem.

Status 71 for System State backup
December 03, 2009 09:50AM
We recently went through the same issue. First of all this is not a NetBackup problem so don't take a lot of heat for it :)

Now the solution. There is a VSS rollup package from MS which fixes this problem. You can get it from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940349
If your Windows team builds the servers using RIS or some other means of scripted installation you should check the following technote:
http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/315898.htm. This issue caused the backups to start & not transfer any data & remain active for a few days. This was post VSS rollup install.

Also check out the following technote, they might also help:
http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/292829.htm

Following article is just helpful in troubleshooting VSS:
http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/323943.htm

Hope this helps.

For the original problem reported, the requester should run ntbackup.exe
and see if they can run a backup of the system state normally.

Disabling multistreaming will not fix the system state backup problem,

Status 71 for System State backup
December 24, 2009 10:45PM
System state on Windows 2000 is backed up by using VSP. Can you check the VSP cache folder on the clients. I've seen NetBackup not cleaning this folder up causing drives to be full & also cause 71 errors.

Also is it possible for you to send us the backup selection list from the policy?

Did you enable NetBackup Logging (Specifcally the folder BPBKAR
logging).
What is the SP on the client machines?

not sure if I sent this or not...
http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/278505.htm

Did you try one of the clients in a new TEST policy? What is the result?
What if you reboot a client machine and try it?

If you have recently changed netbackup to a latest update, try rolling
back the update.
Any other changes that have been made?
