Compressed Vs. Uncompressed
June 22, 2010 07:44PM
Dear experts,

What are the advantages & disadvantages between using compressed and uncompressed backup in Symantec NetBackup / Backup Exec?
Especially when doing a restore from compressed backup image, besides it will take longer to restore, will it need a different method of restoration?
Please give me some explanation about each of compression by hardware & software.
I'm afraid that we need some different steps to restore from compressed backup images.

Thank you for helping.

Hello,

Regarding Symantec NetBackup:

I cannot comment on the length of backup/restore, there is some overhead
obviously when the client has to compress the data before it sends it to
the media server, upon restore, I have not tested that scenario. The main
benefit for compression before backup (policy-based compression) will
generally cut your backup time in half on a slow bandwidth-line *if* you
have regular fileystem data for example.

IMHO

Client side compression takes more overhead on the client.

Hardware compression puts the overhead on the tape drive.

(never use both! Never never)

I use hardware compression, tape drives do it just fine. And nothing special to do for restores.
