NetWorker 9 transition, questions about free "eLearning" and biggest gotchas
May 03, 2018 02:59PM
All-

Frank's recent question about media pools with NetWorker 9 reminded me
that I've been meaning to seek the wisdom of the list on a couple of
Networker 9 related items.

1) For those of you that went through the free "NetWorker 9.x Technical
Differences" "eLearning" course[1], was it useful, or was it mainly marketing
gloss for product changes?

2) For those of you that have completed the 8.x to 9.1 or 9.2 migration,
what were the biggest surprises or unexpected problems that you ran into?

PS: for anyone that (like me) hasn't yet completed the 8.2 to 9.x
migration, Thomas Child from EMC support pointed me at this document
for 9.1, as part of a great support experience on an unrelated issue
last year:

Not only have we not migrated, I didn't even realize that the 8.x line was
reaching end of life. I'm still at 8.2.4.3 ....

And I don't have the spare resources to install a test 9.x server. Not
that can connect to my physical tape library, for sure. Maybe a VM,
perhaps I can backup to my Data Domain (making a new pool and device
entries), but won't be able to clone to tape (which is a big part of my
production Networker work).

Hi Tim,

I'm still running 8.2.4.11 in our production environment. I do have a test system, and I've done the upgrade from 8.2.4.11 to 9.2.1 twice. The first time was an adventure, with a bunch of problems. Things as simple as the misspelling of a package name (lgtoxtclnt*.rpm) in the "Updating to NetWorker 9.2 from a Previous NetWorker Release Guide". The more serious problems related to the lack of clarity in the order of operations for the update. This documentation is terrible IMHO.

But lessons were learned, and I just did the test upgrade again from 8 to 9 with no problems.

Now, all I have to do is figure out how 9.2 works :) Here is a good one - when looking for details of a client resource, put the NMC in diagnostic mode. You'll be amazed by all the important details that are hidden if you don't do this.

I haven't done any of the online learning, as the good ones all come with a price, and I'm already paying them enough in support fees.

Tim (and all)

For those of us looking at 9.2.1, there is this similar document:
