Client create failing with "null"
December 12, 2018 04:59PM
Using NMC 8.2.4, I am trying to create a client. I am using the wizrd, I
get to the very end, and I get a message "Adding new client <name>". Then
"Operation Failed" and "null" - literally just that one word.

Very helpful message, huh? LOL

I see nothing in the server log. Forward and reverse DNS are working.

Where to go now? (besides opening a ticket; the instant chat help folks
sometimes are ... less than knowledgeable ...)

Michael,
Can you add the client manually? Or does that not work as well?

Re: Client create failing with "null"

I can create it manually, yes. It's the wizard that wasn't woprking.

When I went to create it manually, it complained about an alias to another
client. I canceled at that point. And then went to manually create again
(same name as before), and this time it worked.

So I guess it was that alias message, which didn't come up when using the
wizard. Strange that the wizard didn't alert me to that..

It's backing up now.

Thanks

Just my point of view but I try to add all things manually to Legato these days. We are using version 9 and it is a completely different animal now. Groups turned into policies and a whole new way of looking at things. Glad to help sir.

Besides the Admin GUI you can still use nsradmin.

However, if you use the Admin GUI, may I suggest that you copy the client (modifying name & alias) and change the other parameters in a second step.

Creating a client outside the wizard / manually, may result in a recovery
issue.
Suggest performing a quick / small, file recovery for the client.

A good point. I was able to do a quick restore this morning, so all looks
well.

Which is good, because this is a Domain Controller ...

"Creating a client outside the wizard / manually, may result in a recovery issue."

??? - without any further info, this statement is misleading. And IMHO, it is unlogical and it is wrong.
Why? - Because whatever you do, it will result in a resource. And it is the resource which matters.
Of course, if you don't know how to read it, you will also fail.

I create all of my clients outside of using the wizard. How could it result in a recovery issue? We test ours after each new addition and I have never had a problem with it. Just user preference I guess on how you create them.

Yes, sounds like good underlying environmental best practices.
I view the OP as not exactly the problem but a symptom of the problem.
Granted
"Operation Failed" and "null"
is a “poor error”
I recollect the client wizard would indicate if there are preexisting
issues.

As an interesting side note, I just ran the client wizard again, and it
worked fine (once I slapped the DNS on the client in to submission -
meaning I needed a hosts file, because no one ever set a proper DNS search
order).

Networker is extremely obsessive about DNS being perfect - forward,
reverse, shortname resolving, FQDN, etc.
