Odd problem with tape library - wont deposit
February 13, 2019 05:59AM
I'm still on NW 8, I hope to move to 9 soon. In the meantime, I have a
problem, and EMC won't help me, as my version is too old. (my fault, not
theirs)

We have a Quantum i500 Scalar tape library, 8 LTO-6 drives connected via
FC. We had to have repair on it (one of the drives went bad), and during
repair, they (Quantum) upgraded library and drive firmware to the latest
version. And NW couldn't access the library, all I got were errors. We
restored the old configuration, and everything started working again!

Except for one thing - depositing tapes. I can eject just fine, NW can
access the library just fine, and do everything it needs to do - load
tapes, withdraw tapes, eject tapes, label tapes. Everything except deposit
....

Doesn't matter if I do it from the NMC GUI or commandline, it always
errors out, saying no tapes were deposited.Mind you, there are 6 tapes in
the mail slots, all waiting to be deposited. And yes, this all used to
Just Work, as you would expect.

I know that if I call Quantum, they'll tell me to call EMC, who will tell
me to upgrade first, then call them back.

Any thoughts? I suppose I could try taking the library offline, and using
the library device web interface to deposit tapes. Haven't had a chance to
try that yet, but I think it should work. Problem is, of course, that if
there are tape writing jobs running, I have to stop them, as doing any
operations from the device web interface will take the library offline,
and interrupt the job.

Any thoughts? Besides "Go upgrade so you can call the vendor ...

(I can't wait to move to v9. But we're also in a datacenter move, as well
as a virtualization platform migration at the same time (we're moving our
VMware to now run under Nutanix). As you might imagine, hasn't left me a
lot of time to plan a NW upgrade)

Did you already try "sjimm" ?

Michael,

Do the sjirelem/sjirdtag commands show you the tapes in the mail slots? If so, can you use sjimm to get them into the library (without having to take it offline)... and then whatever you were going to do to get NetWorker to see the tapes after they were deposited...

I will let you know later today. Turns out, my tech removed the tapes from
the deposit slots, when he couldn't get the NMC GUI deposit to work, or
the "nsrjb -d". LOL
So I'll have to go down to the datacenter and load some tapes into those
slots and find out ...

I'm looking at the documentation for "sjimm", but I am confused. How would
I specify the deposit slot?

A typical example would be
sjimm scsidev@0.4.0 slot 4 drive 1

I get that I would need to do

sjimm quantum@x.x.x ??? slot 22

How do you distinguish the mail slots (deposit slots) as opposed to the
storage slots? Google is letting me down, and the command line reference
only show the one example above.

Michael,

We have two Quantum i500's in our Networker configuration. Assuming you are talking about depositing tapes from the I/E slots, I've had this problem with version 8.2.4.11 as well as our current version 9.2.1.3.

I can withdraw tapes using Networker - 'nsrjb -j library_name -w barcode'. But deposit does not work - 'nsrjb -j quantum1 -d barcode'

What I do is just use the Quantum GUI. Even though the library warns that the partition will be offline, active tapes jobs just continue running, the tapes are deposited, then in the Networker deamon.log I see a message "nsrmmgd NSR warning Resynchronizing jukebox `library_name' with nsrlcpd"

After the resynchronization, the tapes appear in the library and everything is good. If the tapes are new, they will show up with a * for the Volume.

That is what I am talking about, yes. It's odd that it did *used* to work.

AH HA! I hope the same holds true for my v8.2.4.3, that active jobs
continue (our library is in use from in the evening until late into the
next afternoon), and that it will automatically resynchronize without
manual intervention.

I'll try that this afternoon, too.

Thanks!

Michael,

sjimm calls the mail slots "inlt" ... So, to move the tape from mail slot 1 to tape slot 22, would be:

sjimm quantum@x.x.x inlt 1 slot 22

Excellent. So hopefully either that, or Mark Davis's solution will work.

If those sjirdtag and sjirelem commands were run while there were actually tapes in the mail slots, then they are invisible. If a IMPORT/EXPORT slot has a tape in it, full should be 1 and there should be a second line telling you something about the tape.

sjirdtag:

Tag Data for /dev/sg-library0, Element Type IMPORT/EXPORT:
Elem[001]: tag_val=1 pres_val=1 inp_enab=1 exp_enab=1 access=1 full=1 imp_exp=0
VolumeTag=<100135L4>

sjirelem:

Element Data for /dev/sg-library0, Element Type IMPORT/EXPORT:
Elem[001]: pres_val=1 inp_enab=1 exp_enab=1 access=1 full=1 imp_exp=0
Origin: type STORAGE, address 1

At least, that's what I get with my Qualstar library...

Does the Quantum GUI see tapes in the mail slots?

No, that run was while they were empty.

> Does the Quantum GUI see tapes in the mail slots?

Yes.

Here's my sjimm result:

C:\Windows\system32>sjimm 17.2.1 inlt 1 slot 18
SJIMM: Input/output error
1640:sjimm: Code:0x29, Str=<Illegal Request, ASC/ASCQ=0x83/0x06 (No vendor
specific information available)>

Now, if I use the Quantum GUI, I *can* import tapes. I see the tapes
loaded there (by barcode), and it does move them into slots. Obviously,
the library status goes from "Ready" to "Not Ready" and back to "Ready".

However, the newly loaded tapes don't show up in the library slot listings
until I do:

nsrjb -j <library> -IE

For jukeboxes that have element status capability, you can use the –E
option in conjunction with the – I option to reinitialize the jukebox’s
inventory state. The -E option increases the amount of time it takes to
inventory a jukebox because the hardware must check every component,
including all slots and drives, for the presence of media. You should only
use this option if you are manually swapping media in or out of a jukebox.

That does work,. Aggravating, because the expected "nsrjb -d" or "sjimm"
doesn't work, and I'm not sure why, when all other physical operations -
tape mount/load, withdraw, eject - all work.

Maybe I need a firmware or driver update for my server and/or HBA.

No, that run was while they were empty.

Yes.

Here's my sjimm result:

C:\Windows\system32>sjimm 17.2.1 inlt 1 slot 18
SJIMM: Input/output error
1640:sjimm: Code:0x29, Str=<Illegal Request, ASC/ASCQ=0x83/0x06 (No vendor specific information available)>

Now, if I use the Quantum GUI, I *can* import tapes. I see the tapes loaded there (by barcode), and it does move them into slots. Obviously, the library status goes from "Ready" to "Not Ready" and back to "Ready".

However, the newly loaded tapes don't show up in the library slot listings until I do:

nsrjb -j <library> -IE

Michael, do you see the “nsrmmgd NSR warning Resynchronizing jukebox `library_name' in your daemon.log? Once I see this in the log, it takes a few minutes, then the tapes magically appear in the NMC GUI – Devices | Libraries.

Note I also always see the Not Ready – back to Ready in the logs. I never have to run the -IE

Dunno. I didn't wait long enough to find out. I was teaching my tech how
to do this, and didn't want them to just be sitting around waiting.
Besides, he's a young kid, and finds using CLI to be archaic and doesn't
like to do it. :-) Getting him to verify by rendering the log, and then
view it, would have been a bit much.

I believe the library went back to "Ready" state, yes. BUT .. it did *not*
show the newly deposited tapes until I reset the inventory via CLI.
Maybe a difference because I'm still on NW 8.2.4.3 and you're up at a
higher level than me? Or maybe I didn't wait long enough? We don't have
employees stationed at the datacenter where the library is anymore, they
just go down there to eject tapes (I scripted something to show all tapes
marked as "FULL" in the last 24 hours still in the library, and it emails
it to them, so they know what to eject). Another reason why I didn't want
them just sitting around, waiting for the new tapes to show up, so they
can be labeled, and they can leave to come back here.

(yes, they could wait until they got back here and labeled via NMC that
way. But if something happened, at least they are there to try things,
under my direction)

Nope. I just did a search from all the enrties onthat day - Friday
2019-02-15 - and I see nothing that says "synchronizing". I at all
"nsrmmgd NSR warning" messages, and even searched for "syn".

Nuthin'. LOL

Maybe that's something added by a later release than mine. Hence why I
need the "nsrjb -IE".
