Networker 8.0.x Media Index Restore from tape
September 21, 2019 07:26PM
Hi,
We had a W2003 server with 8.0 on it...and it went south.

What are the CLI commands to restore the bootstrap from tape (I have the ssid's and such saved).
The tapes are NDMP and VM backups.

any feed back is helpful!

Also - can we upgrade to a newer version and then restore the indexes to that...and get restores?

Thanks!

Ok.
I've been able to get the volumes relisted in the are.

The 'index' of the new server still has nothing in it.

We'd like to get the boot strap data and index files back in there. I'm missing a step OR I may be thinking that the mmrecov command will auto populate the index....I'm not sure.

Conversly - how would the command look to recover an NDMP backup folder to a drive that is a local folder.

Thanks.

First of all - the file index backups were never part of the bootstrap save set.

To recover the bootstrap use mmrecov or nsrdr (might already work with NW 8.x - I do not remember exactly).
Then follow the instructions.

To recover the index backups, use nsrck later.

More details can be found in the appropriate CLI references (aka manpages).

To recover a NDMP sav set, just use recover. NW then will internally start nsrndmp_recover by itself.

Ah yes. That is correct, thank you.

I was able to get all the tapes listed into the volumes area, when I view the index area, it's empty.
It's the detailed command order that I'm looking for assistance. I ran mmrecov but still can't get what we need.

Can I import into what is a new server? - or better still, can I run a restore command that pulls it from the tape and places it on a local drive?

And now, as a kicker, the Eval Base license went haywire and expired...and I can't get to the tape drive.

*sigh - do you think I have to rebuild or can that be updated/change?

We know this is older software, and do appreciate the responses.

If anyone would care to contact me via phone to assist, please let me know.

Thank you!

Please read the CLI - you will need it for these operations.

As far as I remember 'nsrck -L7 client' will recover the CFI for that client.

With an expired (eval) license, you should be able to recover. However, I might remember that there was an issue controlling the jukebox, if you have one.

20 years ago, it was possible to delete the enabler resource file from the res directory and continue. But since NW 6, the enablers are also stored in the media index. So this will not work any more. But you can still start all over and scan the save sets.

BTW - the file indexes are not necessary to recover. Worst case, recover the whole save set to an empty temp disk and get the files you need from there.

Hi ,
I was able to remove the licenses and then restart the system and re-add...I do NOT want to restart the system again, as that's what caused the license issue - doh!

So - I am at the point of having a server be able to read the tapes, but when I run the restore I get errors:

Failed to propagate handle 096B6A68...
Error: Client source not found for criteria
....
not able to connect or authorize the recover host 'xxxx'

As only you have access to the system, it would be good not only propagating the minimal info. Such will only work if someone else has already seen the exact same error. However, with the very small number of readers, it might help if you leave a little bit more beef at the bone.

I guess that you just have not created the client resource - but this is just a guess.
Rerun the command (with added verbosity) so that we can see what you are actually doing.

Thank you.

I'll take a look at adding verbosity.

The original target is no longer online.
I have created a 'client' so that the tape can be read....but the target no longer exists.

Thank you.

Ok. We got things back online.

I had to get the NDMP configuration set up with a new NDMP password, but we eventually got it working.
Thanks for some insight that help the direction!

No to start a thread - or look for one that lists a specific CLI command for saveset restores. :O
