We enabled jumbo frames just for our Exchange backups, and that helped. TSM server is a p740, 2 10Gb NICs. Backups used to go direct to LTO4 tape which worked ok, but now go to FILE (7200 SAS-NL). ...

When comparing systems, I would use benchmarks suitable for transactional DB systems. Power7 systems have 4 VPUs per CPU, which really makes a difference. Also look at how many I/O cards you will ne ...

Thanks for everyone's feedback on my question. Richard, your comments were just what I was looking for. I'm looking at TSM/HSM and also an LTFS-based product from Crossroads Systems (Strongbox) that ...
PostForum: IBM TSM   Posted: Mon Apr 09, 2012 10:27 am   Subject: File serving with TSM for Space Management

Does anyone who is using TSM for Space Management (aka HSM) know if it can be used to share out filesystems using NFS (or CIFS)? Or are there timeout problems that make this unworkable?

Thanks.

I would be happy to be proven wrong on this, but I believe that snapdiff for CIFS is only supported on Windows. snapdiff for NFS is supported on AIX and Linux.

BTW, that particular error message s ...

Allen,

Thanks for your response.

I did not include your option 0, because I was thinking "large file servers".

Your point about option 0 being potentially more viable if metadata is ...

Grant,

The time stamps are not updated, because a snapdiff incremental does not deactivate deleted files. You need to do periodic 'createnewbase' to do this, which walks the file system and update ...

Keith,

This is not something that the TSM admin controls, and it is not enabled by node. The only way I know of to detect encrypted files is from the client-side DSMC CLI. E.g., dsmc query backup ...

We opened a PMR that sounds like it might match your observations. We have way too many volumes in what I call "barely filling" status, with no explanation of how they got that wa ...

We are looking at Isilon too, along with NetApp, BlueArc, and SoNAS. Backups are a real challenge as these get large in scale. Some observations:

1. NDMP requires periodic full backups. This gen ...

That's exactly what we did - test on a restored copy of a v5 database. We used restore db, but a snapshot should also work. If you have the resources, I suggest doing this testing as it s ...
