Post Conflict with log
Hello everyone.

I'm having a little problem reconciling my log info with what really happened.

So I get the following message in BrightStor's logs:
Quote:
09/01/2010 01:28:52 AM E3406 Unable to read file. (FILE=\\WINNT40\C$\abc.xxx, EC=The parameter is incorrect.)

As a result BrightStor is reporting that the backup was incomplete.

However, should I try perform a restore all the data is there can thus can be restored.

What is bugging me is the errors. Why? What is causing it? Is this a sign to catastrophic failure?

A little background on my environment. ARCserve 12.5 is running on a Windows 2008 Server. The problem data is on Windows NT 4.0 machine. ARCserve connects via the root hidden share. Some of the data being backed up is an Oracle DB, but a batch file is scheduled to run to stop and the start back the services.

ANY input would be greatly appreciated guys.
Thanks for hearing my out.

The Incomplete status indicates that one or more files could not be backed up.

The message indicates which file was missed.

Thanks for the response davidmichel.
But here is the strange thing. The files are backed up. I am able to restore them...thus far (crosses fingers). It's the log that sees it as an error.

I agree that is very strange, and I don't have an answer for why there would be a failure to read (which is necessary in order to generate the error) and yet it still is able to read the file.

Perhaps the problem is not in reading the file itself but its attributes.

Can you elaborate please?

perhaps the failure is with the file attributes, permissions and stuff like that.

I thought of that initially myself, but dreaded that task for checking all those folders! My rationalization for not checking that was that it is simply a network share and that fact the file was really being backed up suggested against that. Which lead me to believe that ARCserve was going something additionally that incompatible with NT 4.0.

But now that you mentioned it, maybe I should pay attention to the file/folder attributes some more. I'm thinking it has something to do that archive bit.

Thanks for your feedback.

Make sure the User provided in the job for the security information is a member of the Backup Operators group and not just Admin.

The program can backup a file and yet not have permissions to clear the Archive bit, which will generate an error. Not sure if it would be this error though.

I am stumped!! Verified that the user was both an admin and backip operator. No luck.

If it happens to the same files every time then move the files to another volume, run error checking and then defragmentation on the volume, then copy the files back.

If it happens to different files each time look to some application such as a virus detection program or any other app that works with the files on the volume.
