I've reinstalled the CA software but still wish to restore files on the tape itself. How to I restore the catalog and then reinstall my files?

I wanted to bump this thread as I'm having a simmilar issue...

I have a interm server set up after a catastrophic failure of my primary, I'm trying to restore the whole system state and data but after running scans of the tapes the sessions aren't listed in the restore list. I've tried recovering the DB from the tapes and I get nothing. Its an unpatched version of 11.5 and I was unsure if patching to SP3 would cause and issues.

Any assistance that can be rendered would be a huge help...

Thanks!

Post Restore is always fun
Hi,

I wish I had the solution to this problem, but I faced the same problem about 6 months ago and had to just start over. Is not the restore the most fun part of the job !!!!

Post Restore from an offsite tape.

First run a Scan on the tape to obtain the information on what sessions are on the tape.

If you want to restore the whole session then run a Restore by Media and select the session needed.

If you want to restore just specific data then run a Merge on that session.
After the Merge has completed then run a Restore by Session and select that specific tape and session.

When a new instalaltion of Arcserve is made, your database(the one that holds the information of the system) is blank.
If a restore is needed and you have no time to restorre the Arcserve Database just do a Merge.
If by any reason a merge fails, you can always do a Restore by media, assuming that there is enough space for the restore operation.
After you have manage to restore your data is a good practice to make, what I call, a "session map". If you have a backup job programmed to run regularly PLEASE write down the session number and the session path. So the next time you need to merge a tape you don't have to merge all the sessions instead you can only merge the session you need, hence cutting down the time to restore you data.

Carlos Alberto,
