Hello,
The ISP I work at is looking at the idea of providing residential customers with local online backup solution. We have been looking mostly at open-source but commercial products are not out of the equation either. Would BackupPC fit this description? The data needs to be easily accessible to the customer but implement a decent amount of security too. We would like to store the data locally here so I'd like to stay away from 3rd party hosting. Any input would be greatly appriciated!
Thanks,
Chris |

| You really need dedupe to make remote backup work. And there are no open-source dedupe solutions. I would just talk to mozy, carbonite, vembu, crashplan about reselling their services. It's a very low-profit margin (and high risk) business anyway. |

| I guess I'm not worried about complete drive backup that would require elimination of duplicate data. I was thinking more of online storage to be offered as another service. If a customer has x amount of space and decides to put 500 copies of the same picture on there, that's fine. I realize there are many places to go where this service is offered for free, but we are looking at a small local customer base, and the peace of mind they know their data is stored locally. On that note, what would be some of the options out there that would address this? |
