enterpriseLinux laptop backups.. what software is out there?
Author Message
Post enterpriseLinux laptop backups.. what software is out there?
Does anybody have any recommendations in this space for an enterprise? Something that works well with the nature of laptops in that they frequently change networks, often are only accessible through a VPN, are on slow wireless links, and need have a fairly feature rich client interface to offer self-service to users such as doing their own restores, setting up includes/excludes, scheduling of backups, etc.

Think like Iron Mountain's Data Protector, but something that supports Linux.

an EMC Avamar or Symantec Puredisk might do the trick for you, although I don't know if they can do opportunistic type backups. You could also look into CDP type products.

I don't think there's much drive for pretty GUI opportunistic laptop backup softwares for Linux right now, so it might be tough to find. You'll probably be stuck with something more server oriented. You could also cook something together using a user-initiated rsync to a central server, and back up to Avamar, Puredisk, NetBackup, or any other backup software from there...

Actually, they both support backups from laptops very well. And I believe Avamar & Asigra support Linux. (I don't think Puredisk does yet.)

Puredisk supports Linux, Solaris, HPUX, AIX Smile We're eval'ing it and Avamar for remote office (servers) right now

You may like to take a look at - http://www.druvaa.com/products/insync.html

Its a PC backup specially for remote users. At-par with Avamar and much much cheaper.

Post Data De-duplication
Jaspreetis could you tell me a little bit more about the data de-duplication and how it will aid in our remote laptop backup issues. I think I understand the concept just looking for more details.

Thanks

There are three potential problems in remote backup (over VPN/WAN) -
1. Bandwidth availability
2. Backup server accessibility
3. Security (more for WAN)

The product (inSync) addresses the situation with -
1. source/agent based data de-duplication to remove duplicates across users and save up to 90% bandwidth.
2. client/agent triggered backups which only need one way port (ALL to 6061) open on the firewall or backup server.
3. the network connection is 2048-bit SSL secured.

More resources for the answer -
a) Remote Backup whitepaper - http://www.druvaa.com/documents/Druvaa_inSync_Whitepaper_Remote_Laptop_Backup.pdf
b) ROI/ De-duplication calculator for PC backups - http://www.druvaa.com/products/insync_roi_calc.html

The website offers FREE download for evaluation and it takes just under 20 minutes to setup your first backup. I mean it.

On SearchDataBackup.com, we have a cool video of Curtis explaining what
dedupe is, how dedupe differs from common compression techniques, etc.

Asigra and puredisk just have server agents. No agents for PCs yet.
Avamar has a generic agents for both server and PCs.

Although the underlying technology in PC and server backup remains almost same, but backup goals and overall productization/usability is different.

BRU Server has native Agents for PC, Mac, Linux, Unix, IRIX, Solaris, FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD and others.

That's what I've been using for a couple years now and I love it!
