The easy way is to use the backup software you used to control the NDMP session. But if you're talking about reading the tape without using NDMP, that will depend on which filter type you used to make that NDMP tape. The filer specifies the backup format. NetApp uses a hacked form of the Unix dump command, so you can read their tapes using the restore command on a Unix system after you fast forward past the tape header. If it's not NetApp, you need to find out what format they're using.
