Post hp branded tapes
Hi all,

I have just bought an LTO2 tape autoloader and in the manual HP tells the following:

Be sure to use only Ultrium Universal cleaning cartridges in any of the 1/8 Ultrium Tape
Autoloaders.

They tell the same for the LTO2 tapes.
I wondered what actually is the difference. Is it just a sort of branding?
Better quality? Will tapes from other vendors not work in my tape autoloader? and if it will work... are there other (brands) with the same quality and who are maybe cheaper?

I am new to tape backup so sorry if this sounds stupid:)

Thanks in advance

Ultrium is a type of tape, not a brand.

I think I should added some details.

The manual is speaking about HP branded LTO2 tapes.
With a specific "part number" or however you want to call it.

So it won't make any difference when I use tapes of different brands?

Greetings

That's std practice for vendors to recommend their own tapes. Most people but whatever brand they like. I won't say there is no difference btw the brands but you aren't stuck with hp.

I'm a newcomer to the forum so this answer is going to be way late to help anyone. But if you'd like a little history, keep reading.

When LTO was first introduced the TPC folks did a lot of work to ensure data compatibility between each of the vendors, Seagate (tape side eventually became Certance which eventually was bought by Quantum), IBM, and HP.
So each vendor could read and append to the others data. Unfortunately, they didn't do the same for cleaning tapes. The problem wasnt' in the tape but in the cartridge memory (CM). The CM contents were not compatible with each other for cleaning tapes. Oops.

So, the Universal Cleaning cartridge was born. Now one cleaning tape could be used in any of the three TPC LTO drives (and Tandberg too, I suppose).

Ta Da
