Unfortunately, that's probably a common answer. Most people (to my chagrin) don't backup laptops/desktops, but more and more are doing it. I believe it's because they feel they've got other places to spend their money.
There are SAAS solutions that go all the way down to the individual user. Products like mozy, carbonite, & evault have pricing all the way down to one laptop, and they use delta differential or dedupe technologies to significantly reduce the amount of data to back up.
There are also solutions for medium to large companies to handle hundreds of thousands of laptops. Here's a directory of the products that are typically used to do that:
