Post Some info to start using LTO 2 drive
Hello,
i work in a video editing studio, we realize dvd for parties, birthdays, marriagea and so on.

We started making backups on dvd to store all data for clients, but optical disk using to archive our work sometimes were unredeable. (i mean old dvd's less than 5 years)

I do not know at all the tape drive but i think that they are more durable... Very Happy
At this moment we have over 1500 dvds.. of previous works... Sad

We want to buy a LTO 2 tape drive to archive our works but....

Assume that we do not use compression :

We have to store 4gb work for one dvd, is it possible read from tape in real time (wait for access time obviously)?

Stream it from tape drive?

Can we burn iso copied form tape directly?

We have to buy a particular software?

We will use this tape drive on Win xp Pro machine.

Thanks for you time

- Why buy LTO2 (100GB/200GB) when it's already LTO4(800GB/1.6TB)? How long your intention to save keep the data? If more than 3 years, please buy a LTO4 instead.

Assume that we do not use compression :

We have to store 4gb work for one dvd, is it possible read from tape in real time (wait for access time obviously)?
- Yes, can be read, but real time is slow, and need to refer to the catalog.

Stream it from tape drive?
- Unlikely, unless you work on a primary storage.

Can we burn iso copied form tape directly?
- Yes, you use the backup.

We have to buy a particular software?
- Yes/No, depending which OEM drive you buy from.

We will use this tape drive on Win xp Pro machine.
- Yes, as long as you have the SCSI / FC Interface.

Thanks for you time

Please refer to the chart below for all the information.

We have customer using Video and Photo for backup. The requirement is they have to edit the photo and video till the project closing, afterwhich to archive to tape drives.

The recommended size of the primary storage is 4TB to 10TB depending on your project volume. High I/O is required as some of these file is not small (Video).

Video/Photo --> Production(NAS Storage) --> LTO drive (Archiving)

Hope the above helps! Wink

<-We have to store 4gb work for one dvd, is it possible read from tape in <-real time (wait for access time obviously)?
<-- Yes, can be read, but real time is slow, and need to refer to the catalog.
Ok but what does mean refer to catalog?

<-Stream it from tape drive?
<-- Unlikely, unless you work on a primary storage.
You mean copy to hard drive first

<-Can we burn iso copied form tape directly?
<-- Yes, you use the backup.
I mean i have on a singular tape over 200 ISO of our works, can i burn directly to dvd burner from tape?

<-We have to buy a particular software?
<-- Yes/No, depending which OEM drive you buy from.
I think i'll use this software on XP Pro

Do you think i can burn directly to dvd from tape?

I have to buy, with your suggestion, one of these:

http://cgi.ebay.it/HP-StorageWorks-LTO-4-Ultrium-1760-SAS-Internal_W0QQitemZ290330031213QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_146?hash=item439904b46d&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A2|66%3A2|39%3A1|293%3A2|294%3A50

or

http://cgi.ebay.it/HP-STORAGEWORKS-LTO-4-ULTRIUM-1760-EXTERNAL-SAS-EH920A_W0QQitemZ370211758250QQcmdZViewItemQQptZCOMP_EN_Networking_Components?hash=item56325720aa&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A2|66%3A2|39%3A1|293%3A2|294%3A50

What do you think about this products?

<-We will use this tape drive on Win xp Pro machine.
<- Yes, as long as you have the SCSI / FC Interface.

I have to buy controller too so SCSI or SAS is the same, but i think i better SAS.

Please refer to the chart below for all the information.

Ok but what does mean refer to catalog?
* Catalog is the index file indicating which and where the file is located in which cartridge.

<-Stream it from tape drive?
<-- Unlikely, unless you work on a primary storage.
You mean copy to hard drive first
* Best practice to work on a NAS.

<-Can we burn iso copied form tape directly?
<-- Yes, you use the backup.
I mean i have on a singular tape over 200 ISO of our works, can i burn directly to dvd burner from tape?
* Yes, you can do that

What do you think about this products?
* Good, they have the backup software (HP Data Protector), but I not sure if they can support XP Windows. Even if they can support, your PC might not be able to take the load.

<-We will use this tape drive on Win xp Pro machine.
<- Yes, as long as you have the SCSI / FC Interface.

I have to buy controller too so SCSI or SAS is the same, but i think i better SAS.
* Different I/O. SAS is more stable 3GB output.
