I have a problem ive never seen before. The client im current working for has an Quantum Scalar i500 LT04 Drives and using HP LTO4 Media. I am finding that the media is breaking in the drives. I see about 1 tape a week or 1 every 2 weeks stuck in a drive, and when i manually eject, the metal and plastic clip on the start of the real of tape are usually missing, or just the plastic clip. These are breaking of in the tape drives.
This Silo has 10 drives, all have been changed, some recently were opened up on site, the bits of tape removed and the drive was again working.
I have 2000 tapes in this pool. There is no pattern for media batches / mounts / serial numbers as to the tapes which are breaking, they are only 2 years old, some have 2 mounts some have 20mounts, the retention is 1 month or 6 months so the media is not getting used heavily.
Quantum say its faulty media. I struggle to see how this is, HP LTO4 media is use on this site in various silo's and no problem. However this is the only i500 on this site.
Anyone seen this before, or have any idea's?
