Suggestions for a backup system?

Post Suggestions for a backup system?
Hi,

I want to install a Backup system for a friend. He stores medical data so it is very important that he can move backuped data with him. I have thought about a TAPE system for him using incremental daily backups and one month complete backups. The thing is that I have not got experience with tape systems. The question is:

a) What system do you recommend?.
b) If I have completed a tape and want to move it away from the office, do I need it for the next incremental backup or does the system store a database for that purpose?.

Thanks in advance,

Jose.

Post That Depends...
Both of those questions depend on the software you're using. What operating system are you using and do you have a backup software you're using/considering?

Thanks for the response. Sorry for the delay but I did not receive mail confirmation :-S.

I am planning to backup a Windows XP system. The first backup will be around 200 GB and each day new, independent files are added for around 50 MB.

I need Incremental backups daily and a complete backup monthly. I was considering using tapes by cycling two groups of them. I.e.:

1st month: whole backup with tape A and subsequent incremental within tape A and A', A'', etc...

2nd month: whole backup with tape B and subsequent incremental within tape B, B', B'' and so on...

3rd month: Back to tapes set A, rewrite them.

I don't know a backup software that allows me to do that (if possible) and if tapes are right for me.

Thanks in advance

Are you just backing up a single server? and only 200GB in size? if not please provide your entire environment specs...
how many servers? total size of data? any retention policy?
if these are medical data, to comply with HIPA I believe it's needs to have 7 years of retention.

let's start with this first...

Hi DiskJockey,

Thanks for your response. Yes, it will be just a computer which now stores around 200GB but is adding around 5 MB per day. New addings are in separate files so it seems to be a good approach to use incremental backups. I would like to use online backup but there is not a good connection there. I don't really know if retention policies apply here (Spain), but I suppose 5 years is ok.

Any hints?

I use a cloud storage solution (Live Vault) for one unmanned site--- we use Continuous backup--- average is 25 KB every few minutes. It's worked out nicely.
