Sybase Backup Solution
Author Message
Post Sybase Backup Solution
Hi Everyone!

Is there any free open source/less cost software available to make sybase backups like symantec netbackup. which can make online backups as scheduled. Sybase is installed on Solaris 10.

If you know any also please mention if it has incremental backup support.

Thanks a lot for reading.

None that I'm aware of. You can dump the database to disk, of course, then get it from there. But I don't know of any opensource systems that will do it automatically other than through scripting.

Pretty much any commercial product in this directory can handle Sybase:

I don't have a Sybase backup script.

The general form of Sybase's dump statement (to disk, using compression) is:

dump database FOO
to "compress::5::/export/file"
stripe on "compress::5::/export/file2"
[additional 'stripe on' lines here]
go

Loading a database is the same (load database FOO from . . .), except its just "compress::/export/file" when dealing with a compressed file.

We use compress level 5 as its the best compression for the speed - about 5:1, which is actually nice since uncompressed dump files to tape drives were no better than 2.5:1 (using LTO-2).
