Post Theoretical network speed calculate howto 
I would like to calculate how long it takes to backup one Gb of data from one server to another. How do I do that?

Assuming you're getting Gigabit speeds, roughly 8 seconds. 1000 MB/s = 120 MB/s, = 8.3 seconds to transfer a Gigabyte.

But that is not the reality, is it? It is not possible to write to a harddisk that fast.

So what you are telling me is correct, but I did not ask the right question!

All things considered, the time to backup a 1 Gb of data, depends on the network and the NIC in the servers and the harddisk controllers and the harddisks (and maybe the software). So if the network is 1 Gigabit, the data is not backed up that fast.

I could backup 10 Mb and measure how long it takes, and then correspond that to 1 Gb, do you agree?
