I have some backup tapes from before I was employed in my current company. I want to see what's on them. Is there software out there that can tell me which software was used to backup to the tapes?

If you are on a Unix box you can use DD to read the first few bytes off the tape, then use the file command to try and identify the blocks. You want to get a robust magic file before doing that. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File_%28command%29
