Backup Central

I'm very new to DP and but I have long experience with Netbackup that
I'm trying to port over to this new product.

We're having lots & lots of problems with mountpoints & disk
rearrangements on both windows & unix clients. Up until now, the
filesystem lists have been specified per clients. The environment has
grown to a point, though, that this is now a serious management issue.
I'm trying to push to abandon the current "everything specified"
arrangement and go to using groupings of clients & self-discovery.

My reading of the fine manual suggests, so far, that the method is to
use "Disk Discovery" for clients and "private exclusions" to keep from
over backing up stuff. Am I on the right track here? Any general
advice?

I was told recently that Disk Discovery does not work with a Windows
client. Reading the fine manual, I haven't found anything like this
yet.

Can anybody confirm or deny?

What you want, is host-base backups with exclude lists.
Advantage is that new filesystems or "drives" (for the windows people) will get automatically discovered at each backup.

Via the GUI you can then configure exclude lists per data-list - or if it;s the same across many systems, just cut/paste the relevant section from the text config files.

I've had no problems with disk discovery on Windows. We're on DP6.0.

Set it up as a Host or Client backup and use exclude lists, just as you indicated.
