Post BE System Recovery Desktop Edition vs. IronMountain BackupPC
Hi Everybody,

I would like to hear some feedback regarding these 2 products.

Our IT department have to create a preliminary comparison chart regarding desktop CDP solutions, since we are about to deploy a CDP solution for ~1000 company's notebooks.

From my own research I have found that BackupPc is a very mature and stable product that supplies a reliable desktop backup/restore solution for a large enterprise.

Surprisingly, I have found zero material regarding the above Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery Desktop Edition.

Thanks ,

Cant help you with Iron Mountain's stuff...

But BackupExec System Recovery (BESR) is a "mature," product, older than Iron Mountain's I think... It used to be called LiveState Recovery, and was from PowerQuest (remember the Partition Magic days?)

I would never refer to BESR as a CDP product, but perhaps we just have different ideas of what CDP is?

I think BESR is best described as an actual desktop backup product, that when it comes to a restore, you can restore your ENTIRE computer to the same hardware, different hardware, and even virtualize your backup to vmware or microsoft formats.

But wait, there's more! You can also recover files and folders from your backup images, and FTP backups to an alternate location.

I'm betting all Iron Mountain can do is files and Folders, and not a complete bare metal recovery?

All data is stored on local storage (DAS, USB, NAS, etc) and then can be copied to an FTP site that you provide.

All backups can be scheduled, or based off an application trigger (new software installed, HDD grows by xx MB's, user log's off, etc)

There is a server edition, and the management console is now FREE, and can manage some 1700 nodes of BESR per console... Well I'm not sure what the current number is, but it used to be 1750 with BESR 8.5, no clue on BESR2010 actually..

Now, if you want something that is more CDP like... BackupExec does have the DLO option which is an add-on to BackupExec. Each file save, saves the file to the DLO server in BE. Each updated PST, has byte level transfers of the PST sent up. NetBackup also has the DLO option, but it's licensed a bit different.
