Exchange Backup Selections

Post Exchange Backup Selections
When making selections for an Exchange mailbox to backup, what exactly needs to be backed up? My thoughts were simply Top Of Information Store, but I wanted to verify if any other selections were necessary.

I received errors when every item for the mailbox was selected to backup. When I limited the selections to just the Top Of The Information Store and Views, I can backup without any issues. With this in mind, I just wanted to see if anything else was necessary.

Prior to Backup Exec v12 (the current version) you really needed to do both an Information Store Backup AND what was called a brick level backup (backup of individual mailboxes). To do the brick level backup the optional Exchange agent was required. If you just backup the Information Store, you will not have the ability to restore individual messages/mailboxes. Not very useful.

I apologize, for I should have added more information before. We backup the information store without issue. My problem was with the brick level backup. I was speaking of when you expand the individual mailbox, there is a category entitled "Top Of Information Store". I was questioning of those categories, what is needed to be backed up besides the Top Of The Information Store.

OK. I backup all the sub-folders under each mailbox, including the top of information store, w/no problem. Currently running Backup Exec v10d, Windows 2000, Exchange 2000. I didn't recall that folder being there, but I have only had to restore messages or mailboxes a handful of times over the past 3+ years, outside of semi-annual testing. I just select the mailbox level and everything under it. I'm looking forward to moving from v10 -> v12 this summer so that I can eliminate the slow brick level backups, but still have the ability to restore individual messages.

You might check out the following web site - http://www.backupexecfaq.com/. It seems to be kept up to date.
