Exec Backup 12 - what components

Post Exec Backup 12 - what components
Hi,

I have the following setup to put in place:

1 central backup server (running Win 2k3 Std)
5 clients to backup(running Win 2k3 SBS)
The backup is done on a NAS connected to the backup server.

We would like to use Backup Exec 12 but I can't figure out exactly what I need. I understand from symantec's website that I only need Backup Exec for Windows server but someone told me I needed Windows Agents for each of my clients.
Do I need these or do they just provide more functionality?

Thank you for your answer,

Fred

No you need those licenses for the agents if the agents will be
running on servers. Also, if you have SQL server or exchange or
anything like that, you will probably need to buy the agents for those
specific pieces of software. But at least if you do have to buy
those, they should come with the remote agent license for the windows
server.

So, just to be sure I understand this right...
if the clients (ie the machines I want to backup) run a windows server OS I need the agents. If the clients run a desktop OS I dont need the agents?

Thanks

You'll need an agent on every computer you want to back up. Those are
how BE connects to the computers that need to be backed up. But, as I
understand the agent licensing, server os needs a license for the
agent but workstations and desktops don't. And there are special
agents for the exchange, lotus domino, sql server, oracle, etc. that
would also need to be purchased if you want to back up those systems.
After you have installed the BE Server, you can push install agents to
computers to be backed up without having the licensing in place, and
you can evaluate the other features like exchange and oracle for 30
days without a license.
