SnapMirror-to-Tape

Post SnapMirror-to-Tape
Hi,

I have inherited an environment that utilizes Syncsort and Snap Mirror-to-Tape using a NetApp R200.

Currently I backup all the data to a NearStore R200, from there I connect directly to a tape library and move the snaps across fiber to tape.

I am looking to migrate away from this approach in favor of using SAN Resource sharing using Syncsort 3.x

I am wondering about migration from the NetApp R200 appliance. I would like to retire that box but I understand that if I need to do a restore from a tape created by snap mirror to tape, I will need the r200?

How can I migrate? is it possible to restore directly from tape to the Syncsort server? How have other users been able to retire NetApp solutions?

Thanks in advance

Hi Kenny,

It's been a while since you posted your query. I hope this answer is still useful. I'm a Syncsort Engineer.
You cannot restore a smtape backup directly to a non-netapp server. You will need a filer. It doesn't have to be the same filer, but it has to be *a* filer running the same version of ONTap or newer. If it is an older version of ONTap you may run into compatibility issues. Starting with Data ONTape 7G, smtape license is not required.
The filer is needed to "understand/translate" the smtape format. I will do some research on any alternatives that might exist.

Thanks.
