If you are correctly configured, and this is dependent on what you want to
do, those tapes that have fallen off the end of the tapecycle are eligible to
be recycled. And its all automatic. By the same token, amanda tracks the
incrementals so you don't have to. If you want to recover a certain file
that is in the backup(s), the recovery software will prompt you to load all
the tapes, in the order of last level0 of that file, then all the
incrementals needed, in order, until you have the most recent version back on
your machine.

What makes you want to ask the question? The man pages are surprisingly up
to date, possibly the best in the free software arena.

Trying to out guess a working amanda system can lead to broken recoveries.
If the storage facilities are not available, I would recommend that
additional tapes be obtained. I don't use them myself, using virtual tapes
on a terrabyte hard drive has proven to be much less trouble for me than the
cheap tapes I could afford ever were.

Wow, thanks! >>blushes<<

Dustin

I wouldn't want you to break an arm Dustin, but really, they seem to be in
quite decent shape, which is more than can be honestly said about 98% of this
bleeding edge stuff. Man pages that are 17 years out of date are one of my
pet peeves. I don't recall now which one it was, but the manpage I checked
for some reason about a month back had a 1993 date at the bottom of it.
Grrrr. The only peeve that ranks above it are the clowns that think everyone
has a working browser, compounded by hiding the .html files very carefully so
they can't be found by anyone with any old time computer knowledge. The
beginner of course can find them just for long enough to delete them usually.
Makes me mutter about their ancestral family tree, and just enough curiosity
to ask what was it they were smoking? So's if I should ever take the habit
again, I'd know what NOT to buy... Not that that is very likely at this late
stage, it will very soon be 21 years since I used tobacco in any form except
2nd hand smoke. I get enough of that from the other end of the house..
