You mean on the holding disk? That's normal but you can configure the
chunksize or turn it off if you wish.

I'm seeing EXTREMELY slow backups of a moderately-sized file system on a
FreeBSD host. I'm a little confused by this, as everything appears to be
working .. it's just REALLY slow...

The most common cause of this is a network duplex mismatch somewhere.
Often between the host and the switch. Note that full<--->auto IS a
mismatch. If one side is locked to full, the other side must be locked,
too.
