Post Access denied
Hi folks--

I'm encountering an access-denied error that I can't figure out. I'm
backing up a WinXP/Home machine using smb, and most of the backup works
just fine. However, there are a few files (roughly 30 out of 1000+),
scattered throughout the hierarchy I'm backing up, that give me
NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED errors. All the files that give this error have
the same extension, .fdr (created by Final Draft). There is no program
accessing those files at the time of the backup. Other files with the
same extension are backed up just fine. I checked those files'
permissions on the XP machine, and they're wide open. BackupPC is
running on a Fedora Core 1 system.

This doesn't seem to be a BackupPC error, but I'm hoping someone can
point me in the right direction.

I tried using smbclient directly:

[root < at > rasputin manual]# smbclient //superhex/superhex_c -U
bmorris%<<pass omitted>>
smb: \> dir writing\Uncorked\Uncorked.fdr
Uncorked.fdr 158490 Fri Feb 6 22:07:45 2004
38146 blocks of size 1048576. 19563 blocks available
smb: \> get writing\Uncorked\Uncorked.fdr
NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED opening remote file \writing\Uncorked\Uncorked.fdr
smb: \> q

Then I tried mounting the XP drive using Samba and user/password for the
files I'm trying to back up:

[root < at > rasputin manual]# cp /net/superhex/writing/Uncorked/Uncorked.fdr .
cp: reading `/net/superhex/writing/Uncorked/Uncorked.fdr': Permission denied

What else can I try? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Gregg

Check the permissions on each of the directories in the path to those files. If the user that you are logging in as doesn't have list and read permissions to at any point in the path, it will fail. I wasted an hour on the same sort thing just a few days ago =)
