Post Actually, no DHCP hosts are working
Hi Johnny,

Whats your host file look like? And, what are your clients. Windows I
might have some insite, but not for Linux/Unix.

working. Pinging the machine works just fine, nmblookup produces the
results below, yet the machine isn't being backed up, and the last error
is always 'no ping'. Presently, it's listed as having failed 37
consecutive times, but I can verify that it shouldn't fail.

Ideas?

The hosts line on the host in question looks like this here:
testing2000 0 hsuttlar < at > booksys.com

I've also tried
testing2000 1 hsuttlar < at > booksys.com

And it results in the same ding-dang thing. The host in question is the
testing department's Windows 2000 server. Hence the name, testing2000. Wink

The host running backuppc is a Redhat machine.

1. Does smbclient work ok? That is, are you able to mount the w2k
server share?
2. If smbclient works, disable ping ($Conf{PingPath} = '/bin/echo'Wink.
Get a backup going?

I suppose one could snoop the network traffic between the two
machines...

Post Actually, no DHCP hosts are working
This answers questions of two people.

Firstly, smbclient is working. To wit:

[root < at > hylafax testing2000]# smbclient '//testing2000/c$' -U BackupManager
doing parameter log file = /var/log/samba/%m.log
doing parameter max log size = 0
doing parameter security = share
doing parameter socket options = TCP_NODELAY SO_RCVBUF=8192 SO_SNDBUF=8192
doing parameter dns proxy = no
pm_process() returned Yes
added interface ip=192.168.10.135 bcast=192.168.10.255 nmask=255.255.255.0
Client started (version 2.0.10).
resolve_lmhosts: Attempting lmhosts lookup for name testing2000<0x20>
resolve_hosts: Attempting host lookup for name testing2000<0x20>
Connecting to 192.168.10.159 at port 139
Password:
Domain=[TESTING] OS=[Windows 5.0] Server=[Windows 2000 LAN Manager]
smb: \>

No problems there.

I'm willing to try the solution with re-doing the line in the hosts
file. Hang on a sec, I'll try it out... After making that change,
restarting backuppc and attempting to start a full backup on the host, the
status is still:

# Last status is state "idle" (no ping) as of 3/11 15:25

Next up was the suggestion to change $Conf{'PingPath'} to /bin/echo, and
try to get a backup going. I made the change to this host's config.pl file
and attempted to start a backup, and status is still:

# Last status is state "idle" (no ping) as of 3/11 15:28.

So, this 100% confirms that the problem is not with ping, but something
with the nmblookup. So, take a look at this nmblookup and tell me if you
see anything wrong with it:

[root < at > hylafax testing2000]# host testing2000
testing2000.internal.booksys.com has address 192.168.10.159
[root < at > hylafax testing2000]# nmblookup -A 192.168.10.159

doing parameter max log size = 0
doing parameter security = share
doing parameter socket options = TCP_NODELAY SO_RCVBUF=8192 SO_SNDBUF=8192
doing parameter dns proxy = no
pm_process() returned Yes
added interface ip=192.168.10.135 bcast=192.168.10.255 nmask=255.255.255.0

Your running quite a different setup that I am. I'm running a Windows
2000 WINS. All of your machines, on multiple network segments map to
this single WINS. This doesn't allow us to use any of the nmblookup or

Looks like your running DNS using FQDNs. Just to play a bit, try
replacing the host entry for testing2000 with the 192.168.10.159 and see
if that makes any difference.

We'll eventually get it figured out.

Yes, nmblookup will call your WINS server if it is defined in smb.conf.

fyi: if your host and client are on separate segments and the router
between them doesn't allow directed netbios calls, nmblookup will fail.

In my smb.conf file, the WINS server line looks like this:
# WINS Server - Tells the NMBD components of Samba to be a WINS Client
# Note: Samba can be either a WINS Server, or a WINS Client, but NOT
both
; wins server = w.x.y.z

So I would guess that from backuppc's perspective, it's undefined. Wink

It seems vaguely interesting that there are no 'no ping response' lines
since 2/28.

nmblookup looks ok.

According to the dump code, you should be getting "no ping response" in
your LOG. Are you?

This answers questions of two people.

Firstly, smbclient is working. To wit:

[root < at > hylafax testing2000]# smbclient '//testing2000/c$' -U
BackupManager
doing parameter log file = /var/log/samba/%m.log
doing parameter max log size = 0
doing parameter security = share
doing parameter socket options = TCP_NODELAY SO_RCVBUF=8192
SO_SNDBUF=8192
doing parameter dns proxy = no
pm_process() returned Yes
added interface ip=192.168.10.135 bcast=192.168.10.255
nmask=255.255.255.0
Client started (version 2.0.10).
resolve_lmhosts: Attempting lmhosts lookup for name testing2000<0x20>
resolve_hosts: Attempting host lookup for name testing2000<0x20>
Connecting to 192.168.10.159 at port 139
Password:
Domain=[TESTING] OS=[Windows 5.0] Server=[Windows 2000 LAN Manager]
smb: \>

No problems there.

I'm willing to try the solution with re-doing the line in the hosts
file. Hang on a sec, I'll try it out... After making that change,
restarting backuppc and attempting to start a full backup on the host,
the
status is still:

# Last status is state "idle" (no ping) as of 3/11 15:25

Next up was the suggestion to change $Conf{'PingPath'} to /bin/echo, and
try to get a backup going. I made the change to this host's config.pl
file
and attempted to start a backup, and status is still:

# Last status is state "idle" (no ping) as of 3/11 15:28.

So, this 100% confirms that the problem is not with ping, but something
with the nmblookup. So, take a look at this nmblookup and tell me if you
see anything wrong with it:

[root < at > hylafax testing2000]# host testing2000
testing2000.internal.booksys.com has address 192.168.10.159
[root < at > hylafax testing2000]# nmblookup -A 192.168.10.159
doing parameter log file = /var/log/samba/%m.log
doing parameter max log size = 0
doing parameter security = share
doing parameter socket options = TCP_NODELAY SO_RCVBUF=8192
SO_SNDBUF=8192
doing parameter dns proxy = no
pm_process() returned Yes
added interface ip=192.168.10.135 bcast=192.168.10.255
nmask=255.255.255.0
bind succeeded on port 0
Socket opened.
Looking up status of 192.168.10.159
received 8 names

Can you do, from the RH box, smbclient '//testing2000/c$ -U

prompt?

.... Re-reading your message brings back memories of a problem I had
early on.. I had 10 hosts and all but host 4 would backup. I
eventually deleted line 4 and put the host back in at the end. It
started backing up. Has worked every since. I put it off as having
something embedded in the line that BackupPC could see.

Just a thought.

The hosts line on the host in question looks like this here:
testing2000 0 hsuttlar < at > booksys.com

I've also tried
testing2000 1 hsuttlar < at > booksys.com

And it results in the same ding-dang thing. The host in question is
the
testing department's Windows 2000 server. Hence the name,
testing2000. Wink

The host running backuppc is a Redhat machine.

Hi Johnny,

Whats your host file look like? And, what are your clients.
Windows I
might have some insite, but not for Linux/Unix.

Does anyone have any idea what this problem might be? This host
still
isn't working, and I still can't find any good reason why it's not
working. Pinging the machine works just fine, nmblookup produces
the
results below, yet the machine isn't being backed up, and the last
error
is always 'no ping'. Presently, it's listed as having failed 37
consecutive times, but I can verify that it shouldn't fail.

Ideas?
