Backuppc failing on RHEL 3.0
Author Message
Post Backuppc failing on RHEL 3.0
Hi,

I'm not sure if this issue was already discussed in this list or something is
simply not configured correctly on my machine.

We have a Redhat Enterprise Linux 3.0 installation at work, we tested both the
latest stable and beta versions of backuppc and loaded the latest RsyncP perl
module but both versions failed to backup a Linux machine when the file
"/etc/issue" exists and contains few lines of message. It connected to the
remote machine and executed rsync but it just never backup any data. However,
if this file (/etc/issue - plane text file) is removed, backuppc works fine. We
used "rsync" as the backup method and started Apache as "backuppc".

Has anyone ran into this issue before? I'm not currently at work so I won't be
able to give detailed info about the server logs but I could send it tomorrow
if anyone is interested.

My backuppc installation at home running on FC1 with Apache & setuid bit set is
working fine on the stable backuppc version.

Thanks,
kuybicol

You did say you are using the latest version of File::RsyncP, but please
verify the version that you are using. There was a bug prior to 0.47
that caused the file list in rsync to get corrupted in certain cases.

I can't explain how removing a single text file would make a
difference. Does it still fail when you just backup /etc?

Please try to find a case with a reasonable number of files that fails.
Then set $Conf{XferLogLevel} ($Conf{RsyncLogLevel} in 2.0.2) to 8 and
email me (off list) the XferLOG.bad file.

Finally, it is worth testing the rsync setup without BackupPC just
to make sure the problem doesn't happen with standard rsync.
Look at the rsync command at the top of the XferLOG.bad file
and use a similar command (without the --server and --sender
options).

Craig
