Post BackupPC Issues
Dear Lists,

Need to seek an advise on the situation below :

I have one server with BackupPC installed=2E The data to be backed up also=

reside in this server=2E However, the backup destination is on another ser=
ver
which can be mapped using smbfs=2E

I installed BackupPC with Install & Data Directory on /mnt/storage/backupp=
c
which is mounted remote server=2E I run BackupPC & mounted the remote serv=
er
using 'www' user=2E

The problem is I can't start the BackupPC, here is the error :

2004-06-24 16:50:51 Reading hosts file
2004-06-24 16:50:51 Added host kkbsmb02 to backup list
2004-06-24 16:50:51 unix bind() failed: Operation not permitted

Any idea how to solve the error or how to install BackupPC based on the
above situation?

Many Thanks,
Han Lin

Bad idea. AFAIK, smbfs doesn't support hardlinks. Set up BackupPC on the
destination server, set up smbfs (if you need it) on the source

BackupPC creates a unix-domain socket in /mnt/storage/backuppc/log,
which fails. This means the remote-mounted file systems doesn't
support unix-domain sockets. What sort of file system is this?
NFS is fine, but SMB is not.

Hi Craig,

Yes, it is smbfs. I tried to create a 'log' symlink to
/mnt/storage/backuppc/log but Operation not permitted.

Any solution for smbfs?

Regards,
Han Lin

There is no way that the BackupPC data store can be supported on smbfs,
since smbfs does not support unix sockets or hardlinks.
