Post BackupPC problems
Hi,
I recently upgraded from Mandrake Linux 9.2 to mandrake linux 10, and I was using BackupPC 2.0.2 in Mandrake Linux 9.2, and everything worked fine. Now, with 10, I get weird problems when I try to backup windows machines. The actual file transfer is successful, as I can see all the files being copied to backups/pc/machineid/new/WUTEMP. But as soon as the files are done transferring, these are deleted and backuppc reports a failed backup. In trying to debug I made a share with a few text files in it, and tried to back that up (I had removed all files and settings, so there were no previous backups or pooling files; this is a fresh install of backuppc with the config.pl properly set). All that backuppc says is "backup failed" in the PC summary screen on the cgi file, when I set conf{BackupZeroFilesIsFatal}=0. If conf{BackupZeroFilesIsFatal}=1, then it says "backup failed (No files dumped for share WUTEMP)".

All the XferLOG.bad.z shows is this, when conf{BackupZeroFilesIsFatal}=0 or conf{BackupZeroFilesIsFatal}=1:

Running: /usr/bin/smbclient \\\\machineid\\WUTEMP -U Administrator -E -N -d 1 -c tarmode\ full -Tc -
Xfer PIDs are now 5647,5646
tarExtract: Done: 0 errors, 0 filesExist, 0 sizeExist, 0 sizeExistComp, 7 filesTotal, 593 sizeTotal

Can anyone enlighten me as to why this would be happening? I used the src.rpm for Samba 3.0.2a from mandrake, and added the custom patch for the multiple exclusion list, but in the case that I present here, nothing was excluded (i.e. the exclusion list was set to undef), so I don't think that would affect it. Is there some "functionality" in samba 3.0.2a that breaks backuppc?
Thanks!

Well, it turns out I was correct about the problem originating with samba: Turns out I was getting this error from smbclient:

/usr/bin/smbclient \\\\machineid\\WUTEMP -U guest -E -N
-d 7 -c tarmode\ full -Tc - | tar tvf -

-snip-
Opening cache file at /var/cache/samba/gencache.tdb
tdb(unnamed): tdb_open_ex: could not open file /var/cache/samba/gencache.tdb: Permission denied
Attempt to open gencache.tdb has failed.
-snip-

So, once I set permissions for /var/cache/samba/gencache.tdb to a+wr, it succeeded fine, and backuppc was able to do backups just fine from then on.

What's really strange, is I didn't have to do this with my mandrake linux 9.2 box (the permissions for /var/cache/samba/gencache.tdb were only u+wr for root). Is this normal and I just didn't google for it?
I just thought this was really weird as it hadn't happened to me before. Guess I need to remember to turn up debug settings before freaking out!

I'm too new to all this to know what your problem might be; but I have found
it helpful to just run the backup by hand from the command line, using an
invocation like:
/path/to/backuppc/bin/BackupPC_dump -v -f <hostname>

oftentimes this will provide you with more information than the web
interface.

thanks to whoever first told me about this! Smile
