different hosts, different schedules, different directories

Post different hosts, different schedules, different directories
hello,

here comes the next question i could not find answered anywhere. please
fee free to just point me to older posts
if this has been discussed a 1000 times already ...

so i have different directory trees on my host that i originally wanted
back-upped with different schedules.
it seems that does not really work. well, probably no harm done just
backing up everything with the same schedule.
although, just in case, if anybody knows how to do this ...

also ... how do i go about different directory trees on different
computers with different schedules.

so on one computer i may want /home/data backed-up. but on another there
is /home/clients.

it seems this is possible by going rather unelegantly directly into each
hosts config files. is that the way it is done,
or is there a way to accomplish this from the web interface ?

1000 thanks

ingo

Yes, in the web interface select the host, 'edit config', and there is
a link for the xfer options. If you have groups of machines with
similar settings, after creating the first of a type you can add
others in the web interface with the 'edit hosts' link using the
NEWNAME=OLDNAME syntax to copy the individual settings.

In the web interface, select the host you want to change and then go to "Edit Config" (the one in the host menu at the top, NOT in the server menu). There, you can change everything (including schedules and backup targets)  for that host.

Of course you can also change the hosts config files directly (that's actually what the web interface does, too)

oh ...

o.k. ... got it ...

i was looking in the main menu, went into hosts and did not find any way
to select that host there.

and did not see the HUGE "select a host" at the top left.

i think it might be very intuitive to also have a button "select this
host for detailed config..." in the "hosts" tab in the main menu.
but that's fine ... works ... my mistake, of course

geee ...

You can get there from the host links on the 'host summary' page also.  It is a good idea to visit that page occasionally and scan down the 'last backup' column to make sure the numbers are less than 1.

If you configured your backup-schedule that way.

I do have lots machines with an incremental every two days and a full backup
every two weeks. And there are some system with incremental every week and
full every month...

Better check the same page for any yellow or orange lines as this marks non-
reachable machines and errors.

Have fun,

Arnold

I'm not sure I see or understand the question here. I know English is
not your first language but please try to be a little clearer in
stating what you are really trying to do and what your question is.

Again not sure what you mean by schedules. Are you talking about when
backups run or about what gets backed up?

or is there a way to accomplish this from the web interface ?

I never use the web interface (I find that inelegant Razz ) but I'm
pretty sure it is possible

host-specific config files so that you can do things (e.g.,

He just had not found the per-host section of the web interface where the 'edit config' link for the host-specific overrides lives.

I think adding a host with the NEW=OLD syntax is more elegant than having to both hand-edit the hosts file and copy a template for the host-specific settings to the right place.   But suit yourself.

But, there was a hint in the original post about wanting to schedule different directories from the same target differently which was not answered.  This is possible, but the only way to do it is to set up what look like different host entries, using ClientNameAlias to point them back to the same target.  Then you can use the per-host configuration settings to select different shares/directories/schedules.
