Direct restore of Samba backups
Author Message
Post Direct restore of Samba backups
The ChangeLog for 1.5.0 says that the CGI interface is able to do a direct
restore "via smbclient or tar". I have successfully direct-restored files on
hosts that were backed up using tar, but on a Windows machine where I used
smb the restore failed. The log entry on that host is:

2002/8/7 01:28:55 Running: /opt/backuppc/bin/BackupPC_tarCreate -h foo -n
9 -s share-name -t /Restore/Path
(tarPid=31760, xferPid=31825)
2002/8/7 01:28:57 Got fatal error during xfer (Abandoning restore )
2002/8/7 01:28:59 Restore aborted (Abandoning restore )

So it looks like it's trying to restore via tar. Is there supposed to be
some mechanism that decides whether tar or smb is used for the restore?

It's using BackupPC_tarCreate to build the data to do the restore. It is
using smbclient. The log messages are a bit misleading. If you look in
the XferLog under the Restore Summary (click on the restore number) you
will see exactly what is going on: both BackupPC_tarCreate and smbclient
are started.

Anyhow, it looks like your PC share is read-only, and that's why the
restore fails.
