Post Disable Tar over SSh
Dear Lists,

Is it possible to only use tar without using SSH?

Thanks,
Han Lin

Yes, assuming you want to just backup local files. Just edit the
relevant config commands and remove ssh. See the comments for
$Conf{TarClientCmd}.

But if you just run tar then it might not have the permissions
to read all the files. You can use sudo to elevate the uid.

Thanks Craig,

I managed to run it perfectly now.

I found that some of the file was not backed up, especially those files
with the permission 600 and only belong to root. I run the BackupPC
under "www" user.

Any way to back them up too?

Thanks.

Regards,
Han Lin

Did you check the timing to see if it is worth the effort compared
to running ssh even to the localhost?

Well, that's the whole point. If tar doesn't run as root, then
it can't read 0600 files owned by root. So you need to run tar
as root. To do that you can use ssh or sudo.

Hi Craig,

Yes, I already run tar with sudo as per FAQ recommend, but the sudo is
only allow 'www' user to use /bin/gtar and not to read the 600
permission.
