dynamically generating lists of directories

Post dynamically generating lists of directories
Hi!

I've got a large mailspool that I want to back up with BackupPC.

Mail is organized into directories -

/var/spool/mail/domain.name/user.name/mailbox

Is there any reason I can't tell BackupPC to generate the list of domains
from MySQL and then turn them into a list of directories to back up? Or
would I be better off backing up the whole spool as 1 directory?

One advantage would be that backups stop happening as soon as a domain is
disabled in the database - no point in backing up a non-paying customer's
data. Smile

Or if someone has a better idea on how to back up loads of mail stored in
maildir format, that would be good to hear too.

And just to make everyone puzzle, how does Hotmail back up their data? Smile

No, not really. You could even stick DBI-based code into the <host>.pl
configuration file to build the list at backup (or consideration) time,
in all likelihood.

Or would I be better off backing up the whole spool as 1 directory?

That said, I can't see a good reason not to, personally, as...

...most non-paying customers change their mind within a handful of days,
and you don't want to be telling them their mail was destroyed in the
intervening time if you still want the customers. Smile

At a guess they use an enterprise tape library and a SAN backup
solution, or they use something like a NetApp Filer, and use the backups
that provides.

Daniel
