Craig,

Is there a maximum length of a directory structure or filename for
BackupPC 2.02?

I seem to be running into several File not found errors and they do
exist. I recently moved the documents to a Samba server and am seeing
the same errors.

Doug

Doug,

I still haven't replied to your earlier email (feb 7) about long path
names. BackupPC itself should allow file names (any one part of a
path) up to 254 characters (one less than the standard OS limit of
255 - I need to fix that in a future release), and path lengths of
whatever the OS allows - perhaps 1024 or more.

I've tested old versions (2.2.x) of smbclient with paths of over 100
characters, but I probably didn't test about 128. I'm not sure what
the limit is. Why don't you try some tests and see what the limit is,
or maybe the samba docs have something to say too?

In this example from your Feb 7th email:

ERRDOS - ERRbadfile (File not found.) opening remote file \My Documents\Esrock Quotes\11529 - ESrock - OTIS2080 & OTIS2080 _ National Accounts Sell Sheets.doc (\My Documents\Esrock Quotes\)

the path name is around 128 bytes. But other files in the email you
sent are over 100 but less than 128.

Rsync and tar are likely to have bigger limits than samba.

I recently moved the documents to a Samba server and am seeing
the same errors.

And do the errors go away when the path lengths are shorter?

Craig

I'll have to dig further into this one.
