Memory utilization vs. $Conf{MaxBackupPCNightlyJobs}
Author Message
Post Memory utilization vs. $Conf{MaxBackupPCNightlyJobs}
Hi Craig,

My server is running the latest CVS just fine (other than one backup which I'll
send detailed logs from in another thread).

I have $Conf{MaxBackupPCNightlyJobs} set to the default of 2 and the nightly job
is now down to about 4 hours.. I was considering setting it to 4 as a test but
before I did I checked out my utilization graphs.

CPU utilization is almost nill (about 1.5% combined) while nightly is running,
but my memory (500M physical) jumps from 300M to 500M as soon as the nightly
jobs run.. I'm guessing doubling the number of nightly jobs will in fact slow
things down as I'll increase swapping (plenty of swap space left). I'm going
to try it for tomorrow to see what happens, but I was hoping to get your 2c
first if I'm wasting my time.

Also, does anyone know of any problems w/ perl 5.8.4? I haven't upgraded from
5.8.3 yet, but am considering doing it.

Thanks
Tony

BackupPC_nightly shouldn't use much memory, so I'm not sure
why you are seeing high memory usage. It is probably inode
caching in the kernel, rather than the user processes.

You should try increasing the number of jobs and see if the
running time is shorter. Failing that, you can now split
BackupPC_nightly over 2 or more nights to speed it up
further.

I haven't tried it. If you do upgrade please tell us if it
works ok.

Craig
